COPING WITH THE DEATH OF A LOVED ONE

Here are some guidelines to help you work through the pain:

  1. When you find yourself saying "if only" - if only I had stopped by to visit last week, called one more time, said "I love you" once more - ask yourself if that person would still be alive if you had made that visit or call. Chances are they would not; the relationship you had built with this person prior to their death is what really matters.
  2. Strained relationships with family members and close friends are normal at times like these.
  3. Realize that not everyone will be able to cope with the depth of your grief. Don't force yourself to forget your grief to make others more comfortable in your presence.
  4. Don't idealize your loved one now that they are gone. Acknowledge any anger or differences that you had with this person.
  5. Don't feel like you need to hang on to the pain to keep the connection to your loved one. Instead, hang on to the memories of the special relationship you had with them.
